All about

BUG was born out of the Biddulph Festival in 2013 where a six week workshop course "Ukuleles for Absolute Beginners" was an instant success with attendances averaging around 40 people per session.

These beginners' sessions at The Biddulph Arms were so successful that, by popular demand, they continued and we have been meeting on a weekly basis ever since.

Many members had never even picked up a ukulele before but under the guidance of tutor Jim Carey they quickly mastered a few chords and began strumming tunes... they were hooked!

Playing with BUG

The ukulele has become very popular all over the world in recent years with clubs and sessions springing up everywhere . It's an easy to handle, fun little instrument to learn and one of the best ways to get going is to play and sing along with other people - remember, you don't need to be able to read music to play the uke.   BUG welcomes everyone, no matter what standard, and the more experienced players tend to help those just starting out with the ukulele.

What music do we play?

The music we play includes not just the songs you probably associate with the ukulele - anyone for Cleaning Windows? -  but also

  • beautiful tunes from the Tin Pan Alley era - think Irving Berlin and George Gershwin

  • fifties, sixties and seventies pop-songs - the Beatles, Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley,
Cliff and the Shadows, Abba, etc.

  • R&B

  • folk and country songs

  • rock 'n' roll

  • whatever our members want to play!

We now have a songbook of well over 1000 songs and we are adding more all the time.
